Towards the end of 1997 I decided a new look was in order. I had ditched my pony tail earlier in the year, after wearing it for over six years. But it wasn't enough. Besides, with the receding hair line I felt I just looked foolish no matter what I did. So I figured I might as well get a buzz cut.

Let's see, what other recent photos are floating around. There have been a handful since January, but several were taken with other people's cameras, and I'm not sure where the others are just now. So, we'll have to make due with images from the past few years for now.
During 1994-95 there was almost constant construction where Columbus
Avenue (Manhattan) was being ripped up, patched, ripped up again, et
cetera, wash, rinse, repeat. Pretty good scam for the contractors:
they installed substandard water pipes, so they were forced to do the
work over again for more money. At any rate, in October of 96 the
first Columbus Avenue Street Fair was held in several years and the
turnout was great. Yes, I am listing to port in this picture, as we'd
been out sampling the wares of the local brew pubs as we wandered up
and down the avenue.
The image at left was created in August of '96, when Congress was
starting to do some irritating things regulating cryptography and it
looked like domestic crypto controls weren't far off.
At any rate, I wasn't pleased that they were
following the will of the FBI and Director of Intelligence in trying
to compromise my right to privacy in the digital age. It seemed to me
a little sarcasm might be in order, but after spending a lot of time
creating that placard in Photoshop I never distributed it. Oh well.
For a period in 1994 I was living on David Spector's couch while
moving from Cambridge to Manhattan. This would sometimes lead to minor
conflicts as the futon/couch was the domain of David's feline
overlord, Cinnabar. So Cinnabar would attempt to exert mind control
over me in staring contests, and I would usually give in and begin
scratching and cossetting her. That and opposable thumbs are, after
all, the only reason they tolerate our presence.
This FaceSaver image taken at Usenix' LISA 8 conference in San Diego
was the basis for the bitmap I've attached to my EMail for several
years now. I spent a long time in late '94 with the Portable BitMap
Toolkit and some image editors trying to figure out how to reduce the
size and resolution of the image, and eventaully got it translated
into the format used in EMail headers. And of course, most people
never see it because Microsoft, AOL, and so forth don't support
it. Sigh.
This image was taken while I was resuscitating an old Canon
XapShot! digital camera at
ICS in Cambridge. Not terribly imaginative, but there you have it.
And now the closer for this section. This image was also taken with the XapShot! at ICS. I took this image and printed out a greyscale copy blown up to cover an 8.5x11" page, and taped it up behind and just below the troublesome HP color printer. I didn't want people to forget me, and figured the best reminder would be when someone had to fiddle with the printers that had taken so much of my time while I was there.
