This is where I rub a few neurons together and try to say something coherent about the band. First thing is, the girl's got funk and she knows how to use it! Monique's got some great sounds coming off that bass, but her voice is a weapon too. It rolls along and carries you into the story, and then wails as the bass and drums mix it up.
Meanwhile Dave's over there pounding out the rhythm and time on the drums. He can pick the whole tune up and carry it along on a wave of percussion, or give Monique a platform to launch her bass and voice. When they go instrumental it's more like a duet than anything else.
January 12th, '98 I hung around and caught this Monday night
show, then drove down to New York so I could go to work the next
day. Not recommended. But after listening to
that tape for so many weeks
and loving every minute of it, I had to see them in action and hear
the live sound.
Jacques seems like a quiet little neighborhood bar late on a Monday night. Somewhere between 20 and 40 people were in the back room and around the bar. This was the first time I'd seen Rick Berlin and he was a riot! Drunk off his ass, he still turned in a solid show and some very good music. I look forward to seeing him again at future shows.
BP was a little cramped for time -- I gather Jacques likes to close promptly, and he wasn't thrilled by the random hooting that broke out from the crowd towards the end. But in the meantime BP turned in a great set with plenty of energy and good execution. The music was top notch, and everybody in the crowd seemed to be having a good time.
